About us

Inside Out Helsinki is a project created by artists Emilie McDermott and Hanna Råst, which aims to bring to you the Helsinki's latest insider addresses and little hidden secrets. The idea came from observing that the city hid many gems in terms of restaurants, galleries or shops, and that it would interesting to have the point of view of Helsinki inhabitants on tips and go-to places in Suomiland's capital. Venturing out of the box, the site intents to showcase more confidential and unique addresses which traditional tourist guides don't mention.
"Helsinki has always had a special place in my heart. After moving back from Berlin in 2013, I was delighted to see this city develop and flourish in new kind of light. Helsinki has become a very active culture-centered city. Helsinki is very town-like even thought it's the capital city of Finland. It has many nice and cozy places where you can have a cup of coffee, drink or whatever you feel like! Only sometimes, they are just hard to find. So I'm happy to be able to spread the word and promote the places I like and feel other people should visit as well." Hanna Råst
"I remember the first time I visited Helsinki. It was in the summer 2013. One night my friend and I were looking for a restaurant, it was late in the evening and we ended up walking for around 3 hours looking for our Holy Grail. After that infamous night, as typical Parisians, we drew the conclusion that there was no place to eat in Helsinki, asides from the local Subway… More than a year later, after having lived in Helsinki and befriended a number of amazing fellow Helsinkiers, I realize how wrong we were and how many amazing treasured addresses the city had. I only wish that we had had the opportunity at the time to discover them! That's how the idea of creating a website on insider Helsinki addresses started. Helsinki is a truly unique and wonderful city, full of opportunities, bubbling with creativity and enthusiasm." Emilie McDermott
Emilie McDermott and Hanna Råst met in September 2014, when Hanna was photographing the group show Voices of the Small for UrbanApa Festival, which McDermott was taking part of. Together they decided to create Inside Out Helsinki, drawing from Råst's photography and McDermott's editorial and video experience.
